WPTech 2015

WPTech 2015

So an Irishman, an American, and a hell of a lot of french people walk into a bar … but wait … I’m getting ahead of myself here let’s start at the beginning.

(TL;DR? Un ou deux images de WPTech 2015)

Saturday saw WordPress Tech 2015 coming to town. For those of you not aware it’s an unofficial WordPress conference run here in Nantes. It’s a one day event and this is the second year it has been running. With the birth of my son last year I completely forgot it was on for 2014. This year I made sure to book in advance and I even booked myself in for the afters party.

The Registration Queue

As with a lot of these conferences it had an early 8am start at least for registration and getting your name badges. I arrived fashionably late ( in fairness at that hour of the morning I’ve no idea when I arrived but it wasn’t for 8AM. Thankfully it was a brisk morning and the promised fog didn’t make an appearance.

Roll up Roll up get your Badges

For me … big problems ensued … I didn’t recognise anyone!!! I’m also not fluent in French and small talk really doesn’t come easily to me. Though I suspect a lot of people were in the same boat.

Not wanting to look completely lost I proceeded to get a few nice snaps of the place and made use of the staircase to get a better vantage point all the while trying to wake up with multiple cups of coffee and pain au chocolate :) and before too long it was time to head into the welcome note and first of the speakers.

The WPTech 2015 Conferences begin

and it all kicks off ...

I’m not going to go into the conferences that much, for any non French speakers they won’t be that interesting … though you’d probably follow the code / slides without so much effort.

The turn out was rather good I believe around 300 people from all over France.

A rather decent turnout for WPTech

The real time twitter stream projected to the side of the speakers was a nice addition with useful bits of information, pictures and a whole load of hashtag spam ( until that started getting nipped in the bud.)

The Real Time Twitter Wall

The first break of the morning brought the discovery of Jenny with a group of others and thank god for that. Finally someone I knew ( ish .. I’d started following Jenny on Twitter I believe shortly after or during WCEU 2013). Getting introduced to a few people is rather nice and on that note I would suggest for future events like this a speak dating style place. I first came across this a few years ago with an Anglophone group in Nantes that would hold a meeting where non native speakers would talk to a native speaker for 5 – 10 minutes before switching partner. I’d love to see a similar format at some of these events for those of us feeling a bit shy about introducing ourselves to random people we may just stalk on twitter ) 10 chairs … 10 people … a 5 minute chat and you switch chairs to the next person. You get to meet people introduce yourself and for those introverted people I think it’d be great not to mention for those who know people they could sit an meet a few people they wouldn’t normally meet. I’d also suggest to groups to Adopt a Mec! (guy or girl and bring them into your group if they are looking lost or not talking to anyone.)

A how to migrate your CMS to WordPress followed with Tony Archambeau (@TonyArchambeauSlides) which took a look at basic SQL commands and procedures for moving a site to WordPress. It avoided unfortunately talking about rewrite rules and plugins like redirection. It would probably still be interesting for those that don’t touch SQL that often. The general rule though is abuse the intern and get them copy and pasting ( joke but if the site is simple then copying and pasting the content might just be a simpler not to mention faster solution ) I believe the Import tool has become active again so it might have been interesting to hear about this as well and where it’s going.

It was then on to the plugin customiser with Remi Corson …

…and of course Jenny gave her talk on using WordPress to Generate PDFs which gave me flashbacks to 2002 when I was doing the same for the first time coming up against all sorts of limitations in relation to images / backgrounds and dealing with 13 different languages for print. It also gave me a lot of fuel for thought and I’ve left with some interesting ideas.

I found most of the WPTech 2015 talks rather interesting in particular those of:

It had been billed as an event for all and not just techies though I’m not too sure about that. Once you start mentioning code / hooks and programming API’s … I’m not so sure. I however did enjoy it a lot not to mention the after party.

Ah yes as I was saying … An Irishman, an American, and a hell of a lot of french people walk into a bar …

I’m still searching for a punch line for that one but in the mean time … yet a few more shots from the After party.

All in all a superb day and I’d like to say a HUGE thank you to Jenny for making me feel so welcome, introducing me to so many people and the chats in English  on a day when my head was melted from all the French; and to Thomas as well for saying hey and hanging out, and last but not least a huge thank you to the organisers of WPTech 2015 for a great day and evening.

Le Lendemain Burger

A Nice Burger in Nantes – Le Bistroquet

Le Bistroquet Nantes

Update 27th January 2017 .. I do believe this place has closed

After heading to the clinque the other day for our last scan before the birth of number two we made a quick stop at Le Bistroquet afterwards and what can I say WOW lovely burger. They seem to have a decent selection of wines as well.

The “Lendemain” burger below is home made beef burger with a healthy chunk of Raclette cheese a big slice of thick bacon with an onion confit. All in all … WOW. Accompanied by lovely sauteed potatoes it’s well worth a stop.

Le Lendemain Burger

Negative things about it. Don’t get the BBQ sauce that’s with it, ask for the pepper sauce instead. Unless of course you’re into what I’d guess is processed BBQ sauce? (Hey if that’s the only negative thing about it all I think we’re doing pretty good)

Lovely staff, pretty quick service, decent wine menu they also do a Formule Midi …  Entree / Plat / Dessert or any combination of that if that’s your kinda thing. It didn’t appeal on the day so we went with the burger.

All in all would go again :)

So if you’re looking for a nice burger in Nantes you’ve found the right place.

It’s located at 87 Rue du Maréchal Joffre in Nantes.

2 Potes Au Feu Logo

I have to admit that I’m constantly blown away by the food at this restaurant. It’s the closest decent restaurant to my place at just 1 tram stop away so it’s well worth it.

2 Potes au Feu Restaurant Nantes

It has some very stylish deco which while I’m not a huge fan of it, it really does work for the place.

2 Potes au Feu Menu du Jour

You can see the pricing above for the Plat du Jour … very reasonable for the food and quality they offer.

Knife and Fork

They keep it consistent and take care of the little details as well

Leffe de Noel

It being christmas at the moment they’ve got some nice Leffe de Noel on tap. They generally have two menus the above which is the Menu du Jour and is great value for the quality of the food or their normal menu which works out at around 18.90 for a starter / main or main / dessert. I’m not a huge dessert person so I always opt for the starter / main. The Menu Du Jour menu works out at I think 12.90 for a starter / main or main / dessert and maybe 15.90 or thereabouts for all three.

z2Starter

For the starter I opted for a marscapone with beetroot something or other … so weird so rich so tasty … the only thing I’d have loved on it would have been a few walnuts!z2Starter2 z2Starter3

For my main I opted for the house burger and dear god is it nice. I’m just always confused as to how one is meant to eat it. Burgers for me are things you pick up with your hands and munch into but it’s HUGE so it might get messy!

Burger you say

The house fries end up looking very greasy and they are to a certain extent but it really works for them.z2Burger

Perfect portions / Perfect food. I’ve yet to have a bad experience there.

If I had one complaint it’d be that the service can take a while, especially when you’re ducking out on your lunch break and have to take a tram there and back. Will it stop me from going there? Not on your life.

Did I mention how nice it is for the owner to come over and shake your hands when you get there and ask how you’re doing?

Want to know more? Go eat there or check out their website. I should add it’s not anywhere near the city centre. You’d need to take a tram from Commerce 10 stops which would take about 10 – 15 minutes. You’d then need to walk for about 5 minutes from the tram stop. I’d highly recommend it though.

What do other people think of it?

Well I know my wife loves it as well so apart from that I can’t vouch for other people.

Autumn is here…

I managed to get out at the weekend to take a few shots around the place. Apart from taking one selfie which I actually quite like I ended up taking this shot which I really love. While not shot in RAW I ended up using the photoshop raw filter in post processing and I really do love it.

Autumn Is Here

Sure you get some weird looks as you set your camera up on the ground but I do love the look. I’m guessing there’s about 1 to two weeks of the autumn leaves on the trees left.

I love the cold!

The setting sun in Nantes

Here’s a shot I took last week of the sun setting over Nantes that has proven to be rather popular at least in terms of Likes on FB :) You can make out the Tour de Bretagne in the distance just to the right of the tall pylon.

The Setting Sun on Nantes

Played with the settings a small bit and dropped the ISO to get this shot and I’m rather happy with it. Some day I’ll know exactly what all the manual settings do for now though lots of experimentation.

Le Stefano Nantes

The first time I wandered by this place my mind screams oh god the signage

Le Stefano

But surprise surprise this is a rather excellent place to have lunch. It’s on the same square as my previous post on La Table Venitienne believe it or not right beside it the terrace is practically joined.

Le Stefano Menu Close up

Today saw us there for the lunch time special Plat du Jour (dish of the day) and the lunch time menu.

Le Stefano Menu

I immediately saw the Plat du Jour and thought to myself god I miss Spain and the cooking. The plat du jour was a “Spanish” Gratin for the love of god they knew I was coming. Next thing I know we’re being given 2 glasses of Sangria on the house which seems to be a Friday special but given it’s the 13th of July the day before Bastille day a lot of people will be taking a long weekend. (PS: They normally give a free glass on Fridays for those interested.)

FREE BOOZE

Struggling through the sangria we both waited for our food. Val chose to go with the Full Menu and I chose just to go with the Plat du Jour. The Full Menu comes with a lovely choice of salads from a salad bar and there’s quite a bit to choose from. It always comes with a half bottle of house wine ( Red / Rose ), a desert and a coffee. That one comes to the price of €12.50 (which is reminiscent of spanish menu del dia prices)

Spanish Gratin

My plat du jour came and I have to say it was lovely (I’ll be trying to cook something similar shortly and hopefully not failing too badly) The table wine was … table wine :) perfectly nice.

I do love a coffee

I rarely have deserts and I opted out of having the Menu special ( which is a grilled meat of some kind or the plat du jour ) BUT Val doesn’t really drink and well she tends not to go near the coffee so it was all MINE!!! :)

All in all I loved it. Extremely friendly staff … the location as on the previous post was rather excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed myself no doubt the sangria helped but .. SHUSH)

All in all I’ll be back seriously at the price the quantity of food and the staff you’d be mad not to. Doesn’t hurt it’s only 5 minutes walk away from our place.

Roll on Bastille Day :)

La Table Vénitienne Nantes

La Table Vénitienne

One of the biggest shocks to the system when moving from Madrid to Nantes was the cost of going out for a meal. Of course I was probably a bit spoiled living in Lavapies in Madrid being able to get a 3 course meal with a coffee and a bottle of wine for 8 or 9 quid. So this week as Cabin Fever kicks into over drive (yes I’m going slightly insane working / living in the home / office all the time) I’ve decided that I’m going to try getting out for lunch a bit more. First up is La Table Vénitienne which is on 1 Place Catinat 44000 Nantes.

I opted for the lunch time special which comes to €13.50 and comes with your main ( any pizza / pasta ), Desert of the day and a Coffee.

It being a bit of a warm day I opted against my usual Spag Bol and went with a Pizza … cheeze, chorizo and an Egg ( something you generally just don’t get in Ireland ). The pizza was cooked in a wood oven at least I think so the base was thing and had that slight burnt wood taste to it.

While it’s not much to look at it was rather tasty I ordered a glass of house red and at 2.40 and a good sized glass it was rather nice as well.

Chorizo and Egg Pizza

Val ended up having a chicken with Tomato and Olive dish with a side of spinach which she said was rather tasty.

Chicken in Tomatoe and Olive sauce

Desert for me was a compot of apple (stewed apple) nice even if a little too sweet and the coffee was nice as well.

The restaurant is on a little square with a roundabout that doesn’t get a huge amount of traffic thankfully so the sun and the company made it a lovely lunch

Good food and good company

All in all 6/10 it’s nice food for lunch … a nice little square and a nice way to spend your lunch hour in the sun and with good company.
